IN THE ELECTRIC MIST
Dirk collaborated heavily with Marco Beltrami on the score to this
Louisiana-filmed adaptation of James Lee Burke's novel "In the Electric Mist
with Confederate Dead," which features Tommy Lee Jones, Mary Steenburgen,
John Goodman, Ned Beatty, and others. Many of the traditional sounds used
in the score were recorded in Dirk's studio, The Cypress House. Dirk also
wrote the lyrics to the end credit song, La Terre Tremblante, and performed
all the traditional instruments used, including fiddle, accordion, triangle,
guitar, and bass.
This wonderful documentary film explores a Canadian family's loss of their
farm from a uniquely intimate perspective. Dirk composed the score for the
film and worked widely with director Steve Suderman, who was brave enough to
make this documentary about his own family, focusing primarily on the
tension between his father and two brothers as they come to realize that the
way of life they had counted on has become unfeasible in the face of growing
domination by the interests of corporate farming. This film was nominated
as a finalist in the 2009 Canadian International Film Festival and has won
Academy Award-winning film written and directed by Anthony Minghella. Dirk worked on set as a consultant regarding the actors' portrayal of traditional musicians, recorded the banjo parts for one of the principal characters, played fife on screen in the film, performed on set to create mood/feeling, helped choose the instruments used in the film, and arranged traditional and contemporary material for the score. On the DVD release, he can be seen and heard performing music from the film with Jack White in a concert associated with the premiere.
